Chromating or Chromate conversion coating is an economical replacement
for anodizing when abrasion resistance is not required. Chem-Film provides
an excellent paint adhesion and a superior base for bonding.
Aluminum parts achieve a higher corrosion resistance when
Chem-Film is applied. Chromate leaves no measurable build-up,
and provides excellent corrosion resistance. Alodine and Irridite
are some of the trade names associated with this process.
Mil-C-5541 Class
1A provides the heaviest coating, while Class
3 is a lighter
variation where low electrical resistance is required. Colors available are clear or gold.
